As populations swell and shift in the Global South, millions of buildings aren’t represented on any map, and their occupants risk missing out on basics like electricity, healthcare, and mail delivery. So Google Research in Africa has used AI to massively up-level the Open Buildings dataset – transforming blurry, low-res satellite imagery into useful, high-res, temporal building and height data from 2016 to 2023. Which allows impactful partners from NGOs to crisis response organizations to see how the areas they serve are changing over time, and use this information to ensure that global development includes everyone. Dr. Steve Boyes has dedicated his life to conserving Africa’s wilderness areas and the species that depend upon them through innovative and integrative methods. Since 2015, Boyes has led the National Geographic Okavango Wilderness Project in surveying all major rivers of the region. The multi-year project has explored 17 major rivers and channels covering a total of over 7,456 miles (12,000 kilometers), working in partnership with local communities, NGOs, and the governments of Angola, Namibia, and Botswana. The team has navigated the region by foot, mountain bike, car, and dug-out mokoro (canoe) in an effort to secure permanent, sustainable protection of the greater Okavango Basin. Tarren-Lynn January is part of the Juliet Crew, the only all-female bush firefighting unit in Cape Town, South Africa. She and her teammates were recruited to encourage more women into firefighting. In Firewoman, by Tarryn Lee Crossman, we bunker down with the crew at their barracks on the Western Cape mountains. They drill, train, bond and recall the hazards of their front-line work. For Tarren, this job has helped her fight her own internal fires and find personal strength. Tarryn Lee Crossman is an award-winning South African producer and director, with more than 15 years’ experience. She has produced a range of content for international TV as well as an acclaimed feature documentary, Fatherland, which screened at festivals and sold globally.
